Principal’s Message

Dear Buckingham Elementary Family,

We have had a very productive term 1. Term 1 will end on November 6th. As a staff we have and will continue to discuss student profiles. We have looked at the present reality and put in place supports/interventions to keep students moving in a positive direction. We believe all students can learn and all students can be challenged. You have received your child’s progress report and will be receiving the term 1 report card on November 13th. Parent Teacher Interviews are on November 25th and 26th.  If you have any cares, concerns or compliments please contact your child’s teacher or myself at the school. We look forward to seeing you at Parent Teacher Interviews.

We have been focused on what good learning looks like at Buckingham School. The characteristics of a Good Learner at Buckingham Elementary school are: Questions, Reflects, Curious, Connect, Perseveres, is Self-aware and Collaboration. The students are now exploring one quality at a time. They are being challenged to define the quality and produce a logo for that quality. The homerooms’ winning qualities are posted in the front lobby. Please take a look the next time you come into the school.

Sincerely,

Dodie Payne

School Updates:

We are so lucky to have our parents and community supporting our school. It amazes me to see the generosity of time and hard work given to improve our school for the students. We have a great school community.

The goal of $20,000.00 for the play structure has been reached. The Beautification Grant has been filled. Thank you to those who supported the project, parents, friends, the business community, Town Councillor Martin Lajeunesse on behalf of the City of Gatineau for approving a $5,000.00 grant, Brookfield for their $3,000.00 sponsorship, the Hansen  family and Sophie Francoeur on behalf of  Paulette Francoeur and Sky McCullough for their donations.

We have had our new soccer nets installed. The students are having fun playing soccer while they still can. We also had the basketball posts straightened. We have  had the big wooden play structure removed.  A big thank you to Bruce Courchaine, Jean Luc Potvin, Andy French, Johnny Villeneuve, Jennifer DeWaard, Jacqui Villeneuve, Stacey Smallian, Shayna, Paige, and Connor Villeneuve, Kaitlyn & Tristan French, Vaughn Roos, Marcus Maloney, and Nick Lamothe. Everyone pitched in to excavate and prepare the field for the soccer nets. Another big THANK YOU!

Anti-Bullying / Anti-Violence:

We are working hard to create a climate that promotes kindness, communication, cooperation, and friendship. One way we are doing this is to have monthly themes. Students will participate in community discussions on the themes and we will celebrate the students who help make these themes come alive in our school.

In October we celebrated RESPECT. The main message is that we respect others no matter what their individual differences are. We respect newcomers and visitors in our school. We respect staff, friends, parents and adults. We respect personal property and individual privacy. We respect individual skills, talents and contributions.

In November we will be discussing and celebrating COMMUNICATION. Children need to be taught how to introduce themselves, interact with all kinds of people, make eye contact, start and maintain a conversation, be successful in interviews, manage relationships, stand up and address a live audience with authority and confidence. Students must learn to create rapport, trust and respect when communicating. We invite you to have these conversations with your children at home as well.

Democracy in the classroom:

The grade 4-6's had the opportunity to practice democracy in the French classroom. They had a chance to vote and learned what the majority means. It opened up a lot of political discussions.
